Sixth Form
The two years in the Sixth Form are important and are likely to be the most exciting and rewarding of a student’s school career. They give students the opportunity to develop their academic potential to the full, to make firm friendships, to take part in many interesting extra-curricular activities and play an important part in the whole school community. Each year we welcome new students from other schools into our Sixth Form. They integrate quickly and happily and every year the new Sixth form develops its own special identity.
The challenges that Sixth Form life presents are exciting but initially can seem somewhat bewildering. To enable her to settle rapidly each girl is allocated to a tutor, joining a group of Lower and Upper Sixth students who normally remain with the same tutor throughout the Sixth Form. The tutor is a friend, supporter and adviser. The weekly tutorial period gives an opportunity for a useful interchange of ideas and is often a time of lively discussion. The tutorial programme is designed to enable students to gain much, covering such issues as the best way to approach academic study and how to balance A Levels with extra-curricular activities.
Tutors get to know the girls well which allows them to give students individual help and guidance. The Sixth Form tutors work closely with the Director of the Sixth Form to provide a comprehensive programme of student care.
The extra-curricular programme gives our students the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities with a strong school tradition in music, sport and dramatic productions. Sixth Formers also take part in the well-established Duke of Edinburgh award and Young Enterprise Schemes. Educational visits supplement each student’s academic studies with field work, visits to art galleries, museums and European cities. There are also opportunities to explore further afield or join an expedition during the summer holidays.
Life
in the Sixth Form is not just about academic work and there are many
opportunities to make a contribution to the school community. As well as
developing their own skills and interests, many Sixth Formers also gain
much from their involvement in organising clubs and activities for pupils
in the Senior School and indeed supporting classes in the Junior School.
The Head Girl and Deputy Head Girls and a team of Sixth Formers make an
invaluable contribution in a variety of roles. All Sixth Formers are included
in some aspect of the running of the school.
